Full day in and around Manali before the long road sections begin tomorrow.

Solang Valley is 14 km north of Manali and sits at around 8,400 ft. In summer the valley is open meadow with mountain views on all sides. A ropeway runs up the slope and optional snow activities are available if there's late season snow. It gets busy on weekends.

Vashisht Hot Springs are natural sulphur springs inside the village of Vashisht, just above Manali. There's a public bath and a temple complex beside it the Vashisht Temple dedicated to the sage Vashisht. The springs are genuinely hot and a good stop after a day of walking.

Tibetan Monastery the Gadhan Thekchhokling Gompa in central Manali was built by Tibetan refugees in 1969. The main prayer hall has a large Buddha statue and traditional thangka paintings. Entry is free.

The Manali-Leh highway starts here. This is a long drive Manali to Jispa is around 145 km but takes most of the day because of road conditions and altitude.

The route crosses Rohtang Pass (3,978m) first the gateway out of the Kullu Valley into the Lahaul region. Beyond Rohtang the terrain changes completely: drier, more open, less green. The road follows the Chandra river through Khoksar, Sissu, and Keylong.

Baralacha La (4,890m) is the second major pass of the day and the highest point on this leg. The pass sits on the watershed between Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh the landscape here is high-altitude barren, with snow patches even in summer. The drive down from Baralacha toward Jispa is one of the more dramatic sections of the highway.

Jispa is a small village in the Bhaga river valley at 3,200m a good overnight stop with basic but comfortable accommodation before the bigger drive tomorrow. Overnight at Jispa.

The longest drive day on the trip and the one that most people remember. Early start after breakfast.

The road crosses Nakeela Pass and then Lachangla Pass (16,617 ft) before dropping into Pang for lunch. Pang is a small roadside settlement at around 15,000 ft tented dhabas, basic food, and a welcome break.

After Pang comes Skyangchu Thang a 42 km flat high-altitude plateau at around 15,000 ft, one of the largest of its kind on earth. The road runs dead straight across it. Sky, mountains, and nothing else for a long stretch. Takes about an hour to cross.

Tanglang La (17,585 ft) is the last major pass before Leh the second highest motorable road in the world. From here the road descends through Debring and Upshi, where it meets the Indus river. The final run into Leh follows the Indus green river banks and suddenly more trees after hours of barren high ground.

Check in to the hotel on arrival. Rest immediately altitude hits harder after a long drive day. Overnight at Leh.

Altitude Awareness: Leh sits at 11,500 ft. After a day at 17,000 ft, the body needs time to recalibrate. Drink plenty of water, skip alcohol, and do not smoke for at least 2 days.

After breakfast, we head out along the Manali-Leh highway toward Sham Valley about 100 km round trip covering four very different stops.

Hall of Fame is a museum built by the Indian Army to document the Kargil war. The exhibits are detailed and it hits differently when you're physically in Ladakh, close to the border. Not a tourist gimmick.

Gurudwara Patthar Sahib sits 40 km from Leh and was built in 1571 to mark Guru Nanak's visit to the region. It's a functioning gurudwara langar is served to all visitors regardless of religion.

Magnetic Hill is an optical illusion on a sloped road where vehicles appear to roll uphill on their own. Sounds unlikely, but it's genuinely puzzling when you're there.

Sangam at Nimu is where the Zanskar river meets the Indus. The two rivers run side by side for a visible stretch before mixing the color contrast between them is clear. Optional river rafting available here. Return to Leh for overnight stay.

Early breakfast, then we drive north toward Nubra Valley. The route goes over Khardung La at 18,380 ft one of the highest motorable passes on earth. The drive up is a series of tight switchbacks with sheer drops on one side. Cold, clear, and worth every kilometer.

Khardung La Pass (18,380 ft) sits 39 km from Leh. Two army checkpoints on both sides carry your ID. At the top, prayer flags, tea stalls, and a view that takes a minute to process.

Deskit Village is the administrative center of Nubra Valley. The Deskit Gompa above it was founded around 1420 AD by Lama Sherab Zangpo and houses about 100 monks a branch of Thiksey Monastery. The annual Gustor festival falls on the 20th and 21st days of the 12th Tibetan calendar month.

Hundar Village is where the cold desert surprises you. Sand dunes sit between snow mountains it looks wrong but it's real. The Bactrian double-humped camels here can be hired for a 2-hour safari through the dunes from Hundar to Deskit. Overnight at Hundar.

Up early to visit Diskit Monastery before the day warms up. From the monastery you get a wide, unobstructed view of Nubra Valley the sand dunes, the green river banks, the mountains stacked behind them. Worth the early start.

Then we drive to Pangong Tso via the Shayok River road longer and rougher than the Chang La route, but the canyon sections, river crossings, and near-empty road make it one of the better drives on the trip.

Pangong Tso sits at 14,000 ft and stretches 134 km, though only the western third falls in India. The water color shifts through the day blue, green, grey depending on the light. The "3 Idiots" shooting location is well marked and everyone stops there. Overnight at camp.

Wake up early the lake at dawn is worth it. The color of the water changes fast in the first hour of light and the camps are quiet. Have breakfast, then we start the drive back to Leh.

The road out climbs to Chang La Pass (17,688 ft) the third highest motorable pass in the world. The ascent from Pangong takes about 2 hours. At the top there's an army post, a small cafe, and prayer flags doing what prayer flags do in high wind.

The descent from Chang La brings you through Durbuk and then Shakti village, where the terrain gradually softens. By the time you reach the main Leh-Manali highway at Karu, you're back in the Indus Valley poplar trees, fields, and the river alongside the road into Leh.

Arrive Leh by late afternoon. Overnight at hotel.

A full day along the Indus Valley road southeast of Leh three major sites and one river stop before the trip ends tomorrow.

Thiksey Monastery (16 km from Leh) is built on a hilltop and resembles the Potala Palace in Lhasa from a distance. The complex has 12 floors, multiple temples, and a 15-meter Maitreya Buddha statue installed in 1980. Early morning prayers are open to visitors if you arrive before 8 AM.

Hemis Monastery (45 km from Leh) is the largest and wealthiest monastery in Ladakh, run by the Drukpa Kagyu order. The museum inside has rare thangkas, silver stupas, and Buddhist artifacts. The annual Hemis Festival in June/July is the biggest monastic festival in Ladakh.

Shey Palace (15 km from Leh) was the old summer capital of Ladakhi kings. The gompa here has a large copper-gilt Buddha and the ruins of the original palace sit above it on the ridge. Less crowded than Thiksey.

Sindhu Ghat is a riverbank along the Indus a quiet end to the day before returning to Leh for dinner and overnight stay.
