Cultural & Heritage Tours of Ladakh

After breakfast, we leave Srinagar on the Srinagar–Leh highway one of the most varied long-distance drives in India. The road covers 205 km today and ends in Kargil. Plan for a full day.

The first major stop is Sonamarg at 2,740m. The valley here is wide, the meadows run alongside the Sindh river, and the surrounding peaks still carry snow well into summer. It's the last significantly green landscape you'll see for several days.

Past Sonamarg, the road climbs to Zoji La Pass at 3,527m the gateway from Kashmir into Ladakh. The pass is usually snow-covered and the road surface deteriorates on the ascent. This is where the landscape changes completely: the lush Kashmir side drops away and the dry, high-altitude terrain of Ladakh begins on the other side.

Drass is the first town after the pass known as the second coldest inhabited place in the world, with winter temperatures that regularly fall below -45°C. We stop here for refreshments and passport checks. Worth a look at the Kargil War Memorial at Tiger Hill if time allows.

A few more hours on the road brings us to Kargil at 2,710m, roughly halfway to Leh. Overnight at hotel.

A long drive 235 km but one of the most varied days on the entire route. The landscape shifts from Kargil's mid-altitude terrain to full Ladakhi barren mountain country by the time you reach Leh.

First stop is Mulbekh, the first Buddhist village after the predominantly Muslim stretch of the highway. On the roadside cliff sits a giant rock-carved statue of Maitreya Buddha estimated to be around 1,000 years old and roughly 9 metres tall. It's carved directly into the boulder face and visible from the road. Worth stopping for.

The road then climbs to Fotu La at 4,166m, the highest pass on the Srinagar–Leh highway. From the top, the view in both directions is wide and unobstructed bare ridgelines and deep valleys as far as visibility allows.

Lunch stop at Lamayuru, one of the oldest and largest monasteries in Ladakh. The gompa sits above a moonscape-like landscape eroded white clay formations surround it on all sides. The monastery dates back to the 10th century and is still active. It's a good place to stretch your legs and eat before the final push to Leh.

The road continues through the Sham Valley, passing villages like Basgo and Nimu, where the Zanskar river joins the Indus a clear confluence where the two rivers run visibly side by side before merging. Then the final run into Leh at 3,500m. Overnight at hotel.

Early breakfast, then north over Khardung La at 18,380 ft one of the highest motorable passes on earth. The road up is 39 km of switchbacks from Leh, cold at the top regardless of the month. Two army checkpoints on either side carry your ID. The view from the pass takes a moment to take in.

We drive down into Nubra Valley and continue to Hundar village, checking in to Nature's Nest North Camp. The cold desert here looks like it shouldn't exist sand dunes sitting between snow mountains. The Bactrian double-humped camels that live here can be hired for a 2-hour safari from Hundar through the dunes to Deskit. It's one of those combinations desert, camels, Himalayan peaks that genuinely surprises people who didn't know Ladakh had this. Overnight at camp or hotel.

Early start for Turtuk, about 115 km from Hundar roughly 3 to 4 hours each way. The Shyok river valley opens up along the drive and the road gets progressively more remote the further you go toward the Line of Control.

Turtuk has a population of around 4,000 and is unlike anywhere else on this route. Until 1971, it was part of Pakistan-administered Baltistan the ceasefire line runs close. The villagers speak Balti, follow Islam, and maintain a culture that's distinct from the Buddhist Ladakh you've been traveling through for the past few days. None of this is a performance for visitors it's simply what Turtuk is.

We walk through the village lanes, past apricot orchards and stone houses, and meet the people. Take your time Turtuk doesn't reward being rushed. Drive back to Hundar in the afternoon. Overnight at camp or hotel.

Up early to visit Diskit Monastery before the day heats up. The gompa sits above the valley and gives you a wide, unobstructed view of Nubra the sand dunes below, the river bend, and the mountains stacked behind them. Worth the climb before the drive.

Then we head to Pangong Tso via the Shayok River road longer and rougher than the Chang La route, but the canyon walls, river crossings, and empty stretches of road make it the better drive for those who care about the journey as much as the destination.

Pangong Tso sits at 14,000 ft and stretches 134 km, with only the western third inside India. The water shifts color through the day blue, green, sometimes grey depending on light and cloud. The 3 Idiots shooting location is clearly marked on the shore and worth stopping at. Overnight at camp by the lake.

A relaxed morning at the lake before the drive back. The water at Pangong looks different in the early hours than it does midday the light is lower, the camp is quiet, and the color is worth seeing before you leave. Late breakfast, then we head to Leh.

The road out climbs to Chang La at 17,688 ft the third highest motorable pass in the world. The ascent from Pangong takes about 2 hours. Army post at the top, a small tea stall, prayer flags in full wind. The descent runs through Durbuk and Shakti before joining the Indus Valley highway at Karu.

On the way into Leh we stop at Thiksey Monastery, 16 km from the city. The complex is built on a hilltop and has 12 floors often compared to the Potala Palace in scale. The 15-metre Maitreya Buddha inside was installed in 1980. Then Shey Palace, 15 km from Leh the old summer capital of the Ladakhi kings, with a copper gilt Buddha in the gompa and the ruins of the original palace above on the ridge. Less visited than Thiksey and easier to walk around at your own pace. Arrive Leh by evening. Overnight at hotel.
